Laminate Shingles

‘Laminate’ shingles, also called ‘architectural’ shingles, were developed in the early 70’s and have grown in popularity ever since. They are constructed utilizing 2 layers that are then laminated together at the plant, hence the term ‘laminate’ shingles. Historically Laminated shingles were rated as 30 year, 40 year, or 50 year depending on thickness and weight, and those descriptions are often used today. Most manufacturers have improved their warranties from 30,40, or 50 years to ‘Lifetime’. Their 2-layer design allows them to add character, color and depth to the roof.

Laminate shingles are the most popular type of shingle in the industry, encompassing 70% of all asphalt roofs installed today. The best brands construct theirs with wind ratings of 110 mph or greater. They are much thicker than 3-tab shingles, and most weigh 215-250 lbs/square. Manufacturers have been able to tailor the color blends and shadow lines in such a way that many high quality laminated shingles give the look of an expensive slate or shake roof.
